UNESCO was created in November of 1946, with a view to creating a peaceful world through international, intellectual collaboration in the wide and cross cutting fields of Education, Sciences, Culture and Communication and Sri Lanka became a member of this established organizetion in 1949.
The Sri Lanka National Commission for UNESCO came into being in 1949 and carries our its programmes of UNESCO and is hosted by the Ministry of Education, Government of Sri Lanka.
The major thrusts of Sri Lanka National Commission for UNESCO in the next medium term will be the promotion of education quality through Teacher Development as also, Education for Peace and Sustainable Development, Science and Technology Development, Management of Scial Transformation, promotion of UNESCO conventions on culture, involving tangible, intangible and underwater cultural heritage and enhancing access to information.
It will my endavour to build the capacities of the Sri Lanka National Commission for UNESCO,in order to add value to the Government of Sri Lanka's programmes through UNESCO's numerous programmes in Education, Sciences, (both Natural and Soocial), Cultural andCommunication to best serve the country's needs.
